Africa - Willem and Joan Bleau, c. 1640

Africae nova descriptio Copper engraving with outline colour to cartographical image and full colour to pictorial borders. Published in Amsterdam by Willem Jansz. and Joan Blaeu c. 1640. Size: 41 x 55,5 cm. In handsome walnut frame. This is a cornerstone map of Africa and is one of the better known, more decorative maps of Africa of the seventeenth century. The map shows major African towns across the top: Tangiers, Ceuta, Algiers, Tunis, Alexandria, Cairo, the island of Mozambique, The Mine at St. George in Guinea and Canaria in the Canary Islands. The left and right borders show various indigenous costumes: Moroccans, Senegalese, traders in Guinea, Congolese, Egyptians, Abyssinians, Mozambicans, the king of Madagascar and inhabitants of Cape of Good Hope. The body of the map is richly embellished with animals, including elephants, monkeys, ostriches, gazelles, lions, cheetahs and camels. In the oceans are numerous sailing ships, sea monsters, flying fish, and a gorgeous compass rose. Much of the geographical information is still based on the Ptolemaic maps, with the Nile shown with its source in the Lakes Zaire and Zaflan. Also included are various other mythical lakes and rivers including the famous Lake Sachaf. Only coastal towns are named on the Cape, with the printing covering much of the unknown territory. Willem Janszoon, or Willem Jansz. Bleau (1571-1638) as he was to be later more commonly known, was one of the noted Dutch cartographers and map publishers of the seventeenth century. After preparation as a pupil of the great Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, Bleau initially concentrated on globemaking and separately published maps, including wall maps of the continents. From 1608, he dominated the market for wall maps and sea atlases, and in 1630 produced his terrestrial atlas. These atlases were continued by his sons Joan (c. 1599-1673) and Cornelis (1610-1644), culminating in the great Atlas Maior of 1662 in 11 volumes by Joan Bleau with subsequent editions. On February 23, 1672 a fire at the offices of the Bleau publishing effectively ended the successful Bleau business. Joan died after the fire in 1673, and, though Joan II continued the business for some time, many of the plates were auctioned shortly thereafter. This map was not reprinted after 1672 as the Africa copperplate is not known to have survived the fire. The Spanish edition of the Atlas Maior was in the process of being printed, including the section on Africa with this map of Africa, when the fire occurred. Blaeu's maps set the standard for the quality of the engraving, paper and colour, as well as a fine depiction of contemporary geographical knowledge. Price: Euro 2.850,- (incl. frame)

PLANNEN VOOR DE VIERDE UITLEG VAN AMSTERDAM “Amstelodamum Celebre Emporium Forma Plana” Kopergravure van Amsterdam vervaardigd door Claes Jansz. Visscher of Joan Blaeu in 1661. Afm. 48,5 x 57,5 cm. Het is aannemelijk dat het stadsbestuur opdrachtgever was voor het vervaardigen van de koperplaat en de kaart. Het gebied van de Vierde Uitleg was nog niet gegraveerd, zeer waarschijnlijk omdat de definitieve invulling nog niet was vastgesteld. In feite is het een werkkaart waarmee voor het gebied van de Vierde Uitleg verschillende gebiedsindelingen en andere uit te voeren plannen door handgetekende annotaties gevisualiseerd konden worden. Er zijn ook een aantal afdrukken bewaard gebleven (in het Amsterdamse Stadsarchief) die als werkkaart zijn gebruikt. Het ontwerp van de kaart met de gebouwen in de bovenhoeken en een stadsprofiel aan de onderzijde grijpt terug op een kaart van Claes Jansz. Visscher (het beursgebouw rechts is een verkleinde weergave van een andere voorstelling die Visscher had gemaakt). De inhoud van het kaartbeeld van de binnenstad is ontleend aan en kaart van Johannes Janssonius die op zijn beurt plattegronden van Joan Blaeu als voorbeeld had gebruikt. Het is mogelijk dat Joan Blaeu de uitgever van dit exemplaar is geweest. Blaeu was immers lid van de vroedschap van Amsterdam en maakte deel uit van een commissie van zeven heren die moest adviseren over de uitbreidingen van de stad. Het is voorstelbaar dat de commissieleden op enig moment de behoefte hadden aan een kaart met nog blanco Vierde Uitleg die ze vervolgens zelf konden annoteren. Door zijn genoemde functies onderhield Joan Blaeu directe relaties met vele andere Amsterdamse politici, waardoor hij de opdracht tot vervaardiging mogelijkerwijs makkelijker kon verkrijgen dan andere kaartmakers. Het kaartbeeld werd nooit voltooid. Wellicht dat het stadsbestuur het voornemen had, om, zodra de Vierde Uitleg zijn definitieve vorm gekregen had, een finale versie te drukken. Vermoedelijk was het de bedoeling om daarbij ook de in de nieuwe uitleg nummers te plaatsen. Die zouden dan verklaard worden in de het lege kader ter linkerzijde. Omdat er echter, in en kort na 1662 meerdere commerciële uitgevers (zoals Nicolaes Visscher en de familie Danckerts) in dit gat in de markt sprongen, werd een stedelijke uitgave van de nog te actualiseren plaat overbodig. 17TH-CENTURY ARNHEM "Aernhem," copper engraving published by Joan Blaeu as part of his famous "Toonneel der Steden" (townbook), published in 1649 in Amsterdam. Coloured by a later hand. Verso: Latin text. Size: 41 x 52.5 cm. The map was not drawn by Joan Blaeu but by the cartographer Nicolaes van Geelkercken in 1639. Van Geelkercken received the commission for this from the Arnhem city council in 1638. Thus, the map depicts the situation around 1639. Van Geelkercken's design can not only be found in this edition by Blaeu, but also in versions published by Jan Jansson and Frederik de Wit. Blaeu describes the city as follows: Arnhem is the capital of the Veluwe region and the seat of the highest court of the Duchy of Guelders. The city is "powerful, splendid, strong, and wealthy in citizens." The Rhine flows along the city wall, and the air is pleasant due to the surrounding forests. In the nearby area, citizens have delightful gardens and estates. On the Veluwe side, toward Maastricht, outside the city lies a hill, "from which a pleasant view over the nearby lands of the Betuwe presents itself." North of the city are hills and valleys planted with forests and heathlands, where various types of wild game can be hunted. There is also the "Wildhaen", once a hunting ground for the dukes, now "very suitable for a stroll for the citizens." South of the city, across the Rhine, are the beautiful Betuwe fields, where oats, barley, peas, beans, and other grains grow in abundance. Against "external violence," the city has five gates "as strong as castles" (four made of stone). Among these, the Janspoort was built in 1537 by Charles of Guelders, who feared the arrival of Emperor Charles V. With respect to the character of its citizens, Blaeu writes that they are "courteous and lovers of the sciences, with many of noble descent living there." They are also heroic. For example, the people of Arnhem assisted during the siege of Neuss by Charles the Bold and provided aid during the devastating fire in Harderwijk in 1503. The city has a chapter of canons (at the St. Walburgis Church), a Franciscan monastery (the "Broeren Kerk" on the map), and an Agnieten Convent (which transitioned to the St. Catherine's Hospital in 1636). At the Commandery of St. John, the Hospitaller knights reside, who once collected tolls at the Janspoort for goods brought in from the Veluwe, a privilege later bought out by the bishop of Utrecht. In the Sint Eusebius' church with its beautiful tower lies Duke Charles of Guelders, buried "in the inner chamber, made of carved marble."
